#24 Merida, Mexico “The City of Peace”

Once we had our “new” car and were settled in our home, we decided to venture into our new city of Merida.  I have taken tons of photos of life in Merida and will be posting many of them throughout multiple posts.

Merida is a very historical and cultural city with a mix of ancient Mayan civilization which dates back to 2600 B.C. and customs brought from the Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th century.  Merida actually was founded by Francisco de Montejo y León in 1542 on top of an ancient Maya city called T’ho, whose stonework was repurposed by the Spaniards as foundations to erect lofty Catholic churches and colonial mansions.

These photos are of the Plaza Grande area which is in the Centro (or center) of the city.  It is a great place to walk around, eat, take a horse and carriage ride or just sit and people watch.  There are also many government buildings and museums around the Plaza Grande area which are free to visit.

These chairs are all over the parks in Merida.

They were originally called Conversation Chairs, but depending on who you may be sitting with, they are also called “Lovers Chairs”.
